The world is burning, though the fires are invisible,
Things collapsing all around us, while most see nothing.
Selfishness is the zeitgeist of the day, as theft is now applauded,
And there is no more comradery, not in truth, not as it was.
Lies have replaced decent hearts, and greed rules the roost,
And love … love is long lost, slain by false words and possessions.
Brains rot watching flashes of nonsense, nothing real,
And to speak of reality is an unpardonable sin.
The horrible men have won, taken it all for themselves,
Abetted by hangers-on, trying to get their piece.
So I take the smoke within me, smoke I choose myself,
To blacken my lungs and shorten my time,
To rid me of a broken heart that will never mend,
And spare me the horrors coming that I cannot end.
To hopefully lay me low before the fires consume me,
As they consume everyone else unwitting,
Swallow the soul of what was once humanity.
I have no reason to continue, though no one does,
Not like this, not for greed and hatred, not for false love.
Take me smoke, for I concede.
Take me quickly or slowly, but take the life I no longer want.
